For hiking to be a pleasure

Everyone can hike! It is healthy and is said to make people happy. And it doesn't matter if you are an experienced hiker or a newbie to the trails. There are few things to bear in mind, however. After all, the Elbe Sandstone Mountains are simply different to other sub-mountainous regions or the Alps.

Bastei im Winter

A hiking trail for every season

In the mild April sun or on a clear day in January: The Elbe Sandstone Mountains Malerweg trail is always an experience – and almost always passable. It is only in times of heavy snow, when it is icy or after a heavy rainfall that you may have to delay your walking experience.

The best time to visit the Malerweg

Collectable postcards and a hiking passport

Certified establishments and tourist information centres along the hiking trail have a collection of picture postcards featuring scenes from Saxon Switzerland, immortalised in the works of famous artists from the 17th to the 20th century. There is a different scene at each stage. You can also have your Malerweg hiking passport stamped at each stage. If you show your stamped hiking passport to tourist information centres along the Malerweg, you will receive a certificate – regardless of how many stages you have completed. And those who have collected all the stamps also receive a small souvenir.
