In the heart of Germany's wild east, directly adjacent to Saxon Switzerland National Park, lies Schmilka, a district of Bad Schandau. Small half-timbered houses with rustic guesthouses cluster up the hillside towards the historic mill dating from 1665, where flour is still ground and traditional craftsmanship is practised in the neighbouring organic bakery and craft brewery. Elegant hotels and stylish holiday apartments line the banks of the Elbe. From the opposite bank, the historic "Lena" ferry, built in 1927, makes the crossing.

It is hardly surprising that this village was awarded the distinction of “Saxony's Most Beautiful Village”. The Schmilka Winter Village was also recognised as a "Beacon of the Tourism Industry" for its creative and sustainable concept.

In winter it is mystical, rustic and cosy, in summer colourful, fresh and full of life – this gem, nestled between village culture and nature, simply has to be experienced: whether for a holiday amid the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, directly on the Painters' Way, or as an ideal base for hiking and climbing in the region. Schmilka on the Elbe – as if untouched by time…
