SPA & RESORT TOWNS

Six spa and recreational resorts in Saxon Switzerland combine classical spa traditions with the most modern health and wellness offerings.
Enchanting nature, clear air, and healing springs led to a rapid development of the spa industry in the 19th century. The great tradition of spa towns remains a commitment and guarantee for the high quality of the offerings to this day.

While recreational areas are places with special climatic and scenic characteristics primarily serving relaxation, spa towns must offer additional facilities for cures, healing, alleviation, or prevention of diseases and often boast exceptionally good air quality. Kneipp health resorts are also distinguished by their specific bioclimate.

Bad Gottleuba-Berggießhübel

"State-Recognized Spa Town"

Idyllically nestled in the romantic Gottleuba Valley, where Saxon Switzerland meets the Eastern Ore Mountains, lies the traditional double spa town of Bad Gottleuba-Berggießhübel. Originally composed of the moor health resort Bad Gottleuba and Saxony's first officially recognized Kneipp spa Berggießhübel, the town of Bad Gottleuba-Berggießhübel was established in 1999. To this day, two traditional rehabilitation clinics and spas offer everything for quick and sustainable regeneration and rehabilitation. Hikes, for example to the Forellensteig and the dam, invite active recreation. The regularly held cultural events as well as a visit to the salt barn or the underground lake of the "Marie Louise Stolln" complete the getaway in the double spa town.

Bad Schandau

"State-Recognized Kneipp Spa"

Surrounded by bizarre rock reefs, pristine forests, and romantic wild streams, the spa town of Bad Schandau is located in the heart of the Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland National Park region. Officially recognized as early as 1800, Bad Schandau is the oldest spa town in the region. Even during the lifetime of Sebastian Anton Kneipp (1821-1897), there was a spa facility here that treated patients using his methods. In 1920, Schandau was designated as a "Bad," and in 1936 as an official Kneipp spa. With its two rehabilitation clinics and excellent wellness hotels, this idyllic town situated on the Elbe River is considered the wellness center of Saxon Switzerland. Since early 2024, Bad Schandau has been the first place in Saxony to hold the title of Kneipp therapeutic bath.

The district of Hinterhermsdorf is the first place in Saxon Switzerland to be certified as a "family-friendly holiday resort." One of the most popular destinations in the region is a boat trip on the Upper Lock. Since 1898, the Kirnitzschtalbahn has been bringing passengers from Bad Schandau to the Lichtenhain Waterfall and is the only one to enter a national park. Sebnitz is the largest officially recognized recreational area in Saxony.
