Express to the Rocky Kingdom

The Elbe Sandstone Mountains, located about 30 kilometers from Dresden and 150 kilometers from Prague, are easily and quickly accessible by almost any means of transportation.

The Elbe Sandstone Mountains are excellently connected by public transportation. Most transport companies in the region are part of the Regional Transport Saxon Switzerland Eastern Ore Mountains. This means: Whether S-Bahn, train, bus, or ferry - one ticket is valid for all modes of local transportation.

Overnight guests receive the Guest Card Mobile in many locations, which allows them to use public transport in the region at no extra cost. For advice & information on route changes, the friendly staff of the Regional Transport Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains (RVSOE) are available at +49 03501 7111999 and the Upper Elbe Transport Association (VVO).

By Train

The Saxon Switzerland is seamlessly connected to the regional and long-distance transport network of Deutsche Bahn. With long-distance travel, one can reach both Dresden and the National Park station Bad Schandau directly, and all other places from here via suburban trains, buses, or ferries.

The main traffic artery of the region is the S-Bahn line S1. It connects the Elbe Sandstone Mountains with the state capital Dresden and Meissen. From Pirna onwards, the tracks follow the course of the Elbe. This provides impressive views of the bizarre rock formations and picturesque towns like Stadt Wehlen, Rathen, or Bad Schandau. From the stops, there are numerous connecting train, bus, and ferry connections, allowing access to the entire area.

By Car

The fastest way to reach the Saxon Switzerland by car is via the A17 or A4 highways. It is advisable to switch from the A4 to the A17 at the Dresden-West interchange and then take the Pirna exit.

You can reach the Hintere Sächsische Schweiz locations via the A4 exit Radeberg, or from Dresden-Nord via the B6 towards Bautzen, turning off towards Stolpen to the Bastei or via Sebnitz towards Bad Schandau or Hinterhermsdorf.

By Bus

German and international bus lines go to Dresden (main station). From there, you can easily transfer to the S-Bahn (S1/S2).

The dense network of Regionalverkehr Sächsische Schweiz Osterzgebirge (RVSOE) facilitates convenient and quick travel throughout the entire national park region. Most tourist destinations are easily accessible by bus.

The bicycle bus service was specifically developed for cyclists on selected routes. Comfortably seated in the bus, with your bike on the trailer, you can overcome elevation changes without effort. Bicycle buses are available in the region during the season from early April to late October on weekends and public holidays.

A similar service is also available for hikers: the hiking buses, which allow you to reach popular hiking areas without changing buses.

National Park Railway

Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland

A special offer in regional transport is the National Park Railway Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland. Since the 19th century, it has connected the two towns of Bad Schandau and Sebnitz. The route ascends about 200 meters in altitude from the Elbe Valley, passes through seven tunnels, and crosses the Sebnitz River 28 times. Its mountainous character gives the nearly 16-kilometer long route its name—a nod to the Semmering Railway in Austria. Not only is the roughly half-hour ride an experience, but hikes along the route are also highly recommended. Each railway stop is also the starting point for several beautiful tours through the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.

Saxon-Bohemian National Park Express

With its various lines, the Saxon-Bohemian National Park Express operates vintage buses and trains to the most sought-after destinations in the region, such as Bastei, Königstein Fortress, Brand, Hohnstein, Prebischtor, Edmundsklamm, and others. The express to Königstein Fortress runs from April to October daily from 9 a.m. every half-hour to the foot of the fortress and back. The Fortress Express also shuttles between Reißiger Platz and Königstein Fortress during Advent weekends for visits to the historically romantic Christmas market. In addition to the regular lines, tourists also have the opportunity to explore the region individually on special trips. For this purpose, the company arranges special tours.

Kirnitzschtal Railway

A nostalgic experience is a ride on the Kirnitzschtal Railway. It is the only tram in the world that enters a national park. The heritage tram clatters leisurely through the wild and romantic valley along the clear mountain stream Kirnitzsch. The nine stops from Bad Schandau to the Lichtenhain Waterfall are ideal starting points for adventurous hikes in the national park.

Elbe (Steam) Shipping

A holiday in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains simply must include a boat trip with the world's oldest and largest paddle steamer fleet. Nowhere else can you so leisurely enjoy the passing landscape as on the sun decks of the Elbe ships.

The ships of the Upper Elbe Passenger Shipping navigate the route Pirna  - Obervogelgesang  - Stadt Wehlen  - Spa Town Rathen  - Königstein  - Bad Schandau  - Hrensko CZ on a regular schedule.

Into the Bohemian

There is a particularly attractive offer for excursions to the Bohemian Switzerland: the Elbe-Labe Ticket. This cross-border ticket is valid for buses and trains throughout the entire VVO network area, on local trains of the Czech Railways (CD) in the Usti district, on city buses in Decin, and for the popular cross-border ferry between Schöna and Hrensko, even on the regional buses in the so-called "Schluckenauer Zipfel" east of Sebnitz as well as in the area south and west of Děčín.

With the Saxony-Bohemia Ticket from Deutsche Bahn, small groups of up to 5 people can travel affordably with selected local trains from all over Saxony to border-close areas in the Czech Republic. The ticket is also available for individual travelers.
