Photo Country Saxon Switzerland

It has character, is always completely natural and infinitely patient: Saxon Switzerland is a fantastic photo model. And it plays along in every season as well as in almost any weather. Sometimes it is the mysterious one, sometimes the cheerful one, sometimes the cool one, sometimes the wild one – and always a little bit the unfathomable one. Even on rainy days, photographers find exciting motifs, less on the viewpoints, than in the valleys and gorges, which now seem even more mystical and jungle-like. And anyone who has ever experienced one of the famous sunrises over the sea of fog in Saxon Switzerland can understand why some photographers keep getting up in the middle of the night for it ...

SIGMA Photowalks & Lens Rental

Discover spots, refine techniques, meet like-minded people: Once a month, SIGMA invites you to a photowalk through Saxon Switzerland. SIGMA lenses can be borrowed for free for this purpose.

Try something new: at the SIGMA rental station in the Bad Schandau Active Center, photographers can rent high-quality SIGMA lenses for a fee and test them on their tours.

Elbe Sandstone Photography:

Tips from the Pro

The Elbe Sandstone Mountains are one of the most photogenic landscapes in Europe. Photographer Philipp Zieger gives tips for better pictures of this natural beauty.

Time of day

The most important times for landscape photographers are the blue and golden hours in the morning and evening. The blue hour, featuring particularly even light and a deep blue sky, begins half to three-quarters of an hour before or after sunrise or sunset. The golden hour is the time after sunrise or before sunset. The low position of the sun provides reddish-orange light, intense colors, and beautiful shadows that emphasize the profile of the landscape.

Motifs

A classic motif is rugged rocks surrounded by gentle morning mist. However, taking a photographic look at details, such as reef pines, unusual sandstone shapes, and the diverse flora, is also worthwhile. Even in bad weather, you can find fairy-tale scenes with mossy rocks or wild waters in the numerous gorges and valleys.

Sea of Fog

The famous sea of fog is particularly common in spring and autumn, when temperatures drop enough at night to reach the dew point. A heavy downpour the day before is also helpful. The wind also plays a role. If it is too strong, the fog cannot collect in the valley.

Location

A place with a high success rate is the Bastei area. There are countless and very special motifs here that are easy to reach. However, you are rarely alone. The Schrammsteine and the Kleiner Winterberg are also particularly attractive in terms of landscape.

Focal length

A wide-angle or ultra-wide-angle lens is an important companion. However, Saxon Switzerland also offers an incredible spectrum of subjects for telephoto lenses over 70 millimeters. With a 16-to-35 and a 70-to-200-millimeter lens (full-frame), you are prepared for many situations.

Beginner mistakes

Many beginners are satisfied too quickly. The close examination of the image and the mindful correction of the image composition, the image sharpness, the exposure settings and the camera position require patience, but the effort pays off in the end with better quality pictures. For landscape photographers, photography in RAW format is also essential.

Photo rules

The following must be observed in the landscape conservation area of Saxon Switzerland:

  • The pictures should leave an impression, not the photo location! Therefore, one naturally takes one's trash back and leaves the vegetation exactly as it was found.
  • No picture is worth an abandoned nest! Therefore, one should strictly observe breeding and nest protection zones and the resting needs of the native animal species, especially in the early morning and late evening hours.
  • Mutual respect is a matter of a photographer's honor.
  • Searching for motifs with caution: pay attention to your own safety.
  • Good preparation for the terrain and weather is an effective frustration protection factor.
  • The use of radio-controlled aircraft is prohibited in the entire area.
  • Lighting fires and smoking are prohibited!

Additionally, the following applies in the Saxon Switzerland National Park:

  • 400 km of hiking trails should make it easy to adhere to the trail regulations – in the core zone, only use marked trails and viewpoints!
  • Photographing together is fun, but with 20 people or more it becomes too stressful, especially for nature. Therefore, please only in small groups.
  • Natural objects are beautiful as they are, artificial lighting or spotlighting is not permitted.
