Bohemian Switzerland National Park
A Landscape without Borders
Endless hiking pleasure is guaranteed in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. Starting in Saxon Switzerland, the journey continues across the German-Czech border into its Bohemian counterpart, which also offers equally impressive landscapes for exploration tours.
The picturesque landscape formations of Saxon Switzerland continue into Czech territory, in Bohemian Switzerland. The youngest national park in the Czech Republic is part of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and, like its counterpart in Saxony, combines forested hiking trails with unique mountain landscapes.
Shortly after Schmilka, across the German-Czech border in Hřensko (Herrnskretschen), the most famous landmark of Bohemian Switzerland, the impressive Pravčická brána, welcomes hikers. It is the largest sandstone arch in Europe and, due to its uniqueness, has even served as a film backdrop for the "Chronicles of Narnia". At the foot of the arch, visitors are also enchanted by a breathtaking view up to Rosenberg.
A special feature of Bohemian Switzerland is the Kamnitz Gorge and the Edmund Gorge. In the deep ravines of this unique canyon landscape, cold air accumulates, allowing rare plant species to thrive at an unusual height of about 200 m above sea level. These include the Two-flowered Violet, Fir Clubmoss, and Knotted Clubmoss. A particularly impressive experience is the boat ride on a section of the gorge, which can only be accessed in this way.
The Nature Park Railway U28 provides a particularly relaxing way to reach Bohemian Switzerland. The train runs between Rumburk and Dolní Poustevna via Sebnitz and Bad Schandau to Děčín. By foot or by bike, one can hike and ride into Bohemian Switzerland from places like Hinterhermsdorf or Rosenthal-Bielatal. The Elbe Cycle Route also continues on the left side of the Elbe from Schöna into the Czech Republic and offers a great opportunity for a day trip to Děčín or Ústí nad Labem.
