Königstein
At the foot of the legendary Königstein Fortress lies the town with its districts. It forms a picturesque starting point for excursions to the table mountains of Saxon Switzerland and into the romantic valleys all around.
The town of Königstein, with its districts Pfaffendorf and Leupoldishain, is nestled in the picturesque landscape of Saxon Switzerland, on the banks of the Elbe. The town owes its name to the former castle and later fortress, which was first mentioned in a document in 1241 and still offers its visitors an insight into its history today. Thus, Königstein Fortress is a unique witness to European fortress architecture.
Due to its central location, Königstein is also an ideal starting point for a wide variety of excursion possibilities in the surrounding area. A hike through the wild and romantic valleys all around or to the table mountains is the best opportunity to marvel at the untouched nature of the national park.
From the Lilienstein, the Pfaffenstein or the Königstein Fortress, one can enjoy a magnificent view far over the Elbe valley. The oldest paddle steamer fleet in the world and the Elbe Cycle Route also offer varied opportunities for a discovery tour through Saxon and Bohemian Switzerland or all the way to the Saxon state capital Dresden.
