Barbarine rock needle

Short facts

  • Königstein/Sächs. Schw.
  • Natural sight

The free-standing rock needle on the Pfaffenstein is one of the most famous rock towers in Saxon Switzerland.

The Barbarine rises at around 43 meters on the southern edge of the Pfaffenstein near Königstein. It is geologically formed by natural weathering and erosion. Its striking shape makes it one of the most famous rock formations in the region.

According to legend, the Barbarine was once a young girl who preferred to go berry picking on a Sunday instead of attending church. As punishment, she was turned to stone.

Since 1975, the Barbarine has been permanently closed to climbing due to its instability. Stabilization measures secure the structure so that it remains intact. The Barbarine is clearly visible from the viewpoint that leads through narrow rock canyons on the Pfaffenstein.
