Living history with panoramic views One of the largest mountain fortresses in Europe and a unique landmark of Saxon Switzerland
The Königstein mountain fortress is one of the largest mountain fortresses in Europe. The 9.5-hectare plateau is home to over 50 historic buildings, including barracks, churches and bastions. The approximately 1.8-kilometre-long walkway leads along the walls, which are up to 42 meters high, and offers views of the Elbe Valley and Saxon Switzerland.
The permanent exhibition "In lapide regis" presents the history of the complex in 33 rooms - from the first documentary mention to its current use as a museum. Other exhibitions include the fortress artillery, the water supply, the underground facilities including the casemates, the deepest well in Saxony and the use of the fortress as a state prison. Multimedia elements and immersive presentations complement the exhibition concept.
Special exhibitions at Königstein Fortress expand the range of attractions. Guided tours through underground corridors and themed tours provide additional insights into the history of the construction and use of the complex.
Königstein Fortress is barrier-free accessible. A panoramic elevator connects the Elbe valley with the plateau. There are several catering facilities available to visitors, including the officers' casino, the "Zum Musketier" bar and the seasonal fortress bakery and beer gardens. There is also a fortress store with souvenirs, books, regional specialties and gift items.
In addition, historic rooms are used for conferences, celebrations and special occasions. Civil and church weddings are possible at the fortress. Seasonal and year-round events such as the Christmas market, concerts and adventure tours complete the offer.
A visit to the fortress should take around two to three hours.
