Directions

From Altendorf, we hike through the Dorfbachklamm gorge down into the Kirnitzschtal valley. Here we continue along the Flößersteig trail to the Ostrauer Mühle mill. The Malerweg then leads uphill via the Mühlweg and the Bauweg onto the Elbleitenweg into the Schrammsteine, an elongated, highly jagged group of rocks. We pass the imposing Schrammtor gate. The Jägersteig ascent takes us via iron ladders to the Schrammstein ridge path with the Schrammstein view. The Wildschützensteig trail is a shorter but more challenging alternative for the ascent. Via the Zurückesteig trail, we hike through the small cathedral to the Sandloch. On the Zeughausweg and the Unterer Affensteinweg, we reach the Lichtenhain waterfall with the terminus of the Kirnitzschtalbahn. From the Lichtenhain waterfall, we hike to the imposing Kuhstall rock cave on the Neuer Wildenstein. Then it's back down into the valley to the Neumannmühle mill, a technical monument to the production of paper from groundwood pulp.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

From Bad Schandau, you can take a historic streetcar through the Kirnitzschtal valley. Here you meet the Malerweg trail at the "Ostrauer Mühle" (11 min) or the "Lichtenhainer Wasserfall" (30 min). The Kirnitzschtalbahn, the smallest tramway in Germany, is the only one to cross a national park. The 1-meter-gauge railroad has been transporting guests since 1898.
