Along the Fremdenweg from Kuhstall to the Großer Winterberg

The route begins at the terminus of the Kirnitzschtalbahn at the Lichtenhainer Waterfall. Behind the parking lot, you first cross a small bridge over the Kirnitzsch river and then follow the signposts of the Malerweg to the left. After a few meters, the path ascends continually until reaching the impressive rock cave Kuhstall at Neuen Wildenstein. Via the Himmelsleiter, you reach Kuhstall (a branch of the path to the left of the railing of the rock gate) climbing many steps between two rock walls up to another magnificent viewpoint. The descent initially continues along the Malerweg over the staircase to the left in front of the rock gate. Just before the descent, there is also a Malerweg information board with interesting details about the Malerweg. At the bottom, the paths then diverge in different directions. The Fremdenweg, starting here (marked with a red dot), continues straight ahead and first crosses Zeughausstraße and then Königsweg. After the arduous ascent (still marked with a red dot) to the Kleiner Winterberg via numerous steps, you are rewarded at the top with a grand view towards the Hintere Raubschloss. From here, the path continues always along the marking “red stripe” to the summit of the Großer Winterberg (556 m). In the 19th century, there was still a wide view into the Elbe valley from up here. Meanwhile, the area is heavily forested, and the previously open views are unfortunately no longer available.

From the Großer Winterberg, the Malerweg then only goes downhill to the pretty village of Schmilka in the Elbe valley.
