The Kirnitzschtal valley between Bad Schandau and Hinterhermsdorf is home to a historic water spectacle that is one of the oldest tourist destinations in the region.
About 200 years ago, there was still the office of the "waterfall drawer" in Lichtenhain in the Kirnitzschtal valley. Whenever there was enough water in the reservoir and enough onlookers had gathered, he would open the weir and the babbling of the Lichtenhain stream would briefly swell to a roar to the "Oh" and "Ah" of the audience. The Lichtenhain waterfall is one of the few curiosities from the early days of tourism in Saxon Switzerland that has survived to this day.
The inn, which opened right next to the waterfall in 1853, has also been preserved. The Gasthof Lichtenhainer Wasserfall is one of the gastronomic legends in Saxon Switzerland - and has been owned by the same family for more than five generations!
The Lichtenhainer waterfall is a popular photo spot, all day both at lunchtime in summer and in winter with beautiful icicles.
