Schwarzbach valley

Natural sight
A quiet valley with history: the Schwarzbach Valley near Hohnstein combines idyllic nature, old railroad lines and traces of medieval robber barons.

The Schwarzbach valley stretches between Hohnstein and Lohsdorf. The narrow stream meanders through dense forest and wide valley meadows.

Small trains used to run through the valley here. The disused narrow-gauge railroad now runs as a hiking trail - with preserved bridges, tunnels and old track remains.

The ruins of Schwarzberg Castle, also known as the Gossdorf Robber's Castle, tower high above the valley. A detour is definitely recommended. In the Middle Ages, knights controlled an old trade route to Lusatia here.

The past is palpable in the Schwarzbach valley: weathered remains of walls, broken tunnel portals, the quiet course of the Schwarzbach. In spring, numerous wood anemones bloom in the valley.
