Gautschgrotte

Cave/stalactite cave
Natural sight
A natural rock overhang with a moss-covered grotto and special ice formations in winter.
The Gautschgrotte lies above the Polenztal valley, nestled in a wooded side valley near Hohnstein and in the middle of the Saxon Switzerland National Park. It is characterized by an approximately 40-metre-wide rock overhang, under which a striking grotto has formed.

The sandstone has been shaped into a semi-circular cavity by water and frost over a long period of time. In the middle of the grotto is a striking rocky outcrop.

In winter in particular, dripping water creates bizarre columns of ice here. In summer, the grotto is a cool place with distinctive moss and fern growth.

The Gautschgrotte can be reached via marked hiking trails and can be easily combined with tours around Hohnstein or to the Brand.
