Evangelical Lutheran St. Johanniskirche Bad Schandau

Short facts

Historic town church with Renaissance altar and striking sandstone tower - centrally located on Bad Schandau's market square.

The Evangelical Lutheran St. Johannis Church dominates the center of Bad Schandau. The current building was constructed from Postelwitz sandstone at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. The 56-metre-high tower with its baroque dome is visible from afar.

The baroque pulpit, which was made from a single block of sandstone, is particularly impressive. Another highlight of the interior is the richly decorated Renaissance altar. It was created around 1575 for Dresden's Kreuzkirche, reached St. John's Church via winding paths and was installed there in 1927.

In the nave, embedded flood marks mark past Elbe floods. The church is regularly used for church services, concerts and cultural events.

From Easter to the end of October, public guided tours take place on Mondays. Group tours are available on request.
