The Sundial Trail in the Bad Schandau district of Krippen is an entertaining walk to a wide variety of sundials, which are presented in detail on information boards.

This walk is not only interesting for astronomy fans. It leads through Krippen and offers the chance to discover the town better.

There are numerous sundials along the way with brief information about their function and special features. You will also see houses with flood marks from the Elbe, which has repeatedly flooded the village.

A detour to the beer garden of the Ziegelscheune inn directly on the Elbe completes the excursion.

The route runs almost exclusively on paved paths (asphalt or concrete). It is therefore also suitable in the rain and for electric wheelchairs.

Directions

From the parking lot, the sundial "search" can start in different directions. You can either walk through a tunnel under the railroad embankment and along the Elbe to the "Ziegelscheune" inn (where only the beer garden is barrier-free), or you can head for the so-called "Markplatz" (see cover picture) in the town center. This is where the numbering of the individual sundial locations begins. The map in the sundial trail flyercan be used as a guide.

The sundials at locations no. 7 to 8a (Berghangweg) and no. 13a (church) and 19 are only accessible via relatively steep paths or small roads, some of which even have granite paving.

In addition to the many sundials, there are also several houses in Krippen with high water marks of the Elbe. There are also monuments commemorating the Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich and Friedrich Gottlob Keller, the inventor of paper production from groundwood pulp.

Directions & Parking facilities

By car

  • From Dresden / Pirna, take the B172 on the right bank of the Elbe to Bad Schandau and turn right to Krippen before the closed Elbe bridge.

Parking lot near the railroad underpass at the mouth of the Krippenbach valley

Take the S-Bahn from Dresden to Bad Schandau, National Park station and continue by bus line 251 or 252 to Krippen, Alte Schule (a barrier-free accessible bus must be requested in advance).

The nearest S-Bahn stop, Krippen, is unfortunately not barrier-free. The ferry connection across the Elbe between Postelwitz - Krippen can also only be used with assistance.

Additional information

If you walk the tour along the suggested route, you will not pass all the sundials. The town of Bad Schandau has published a flyer on the Sundial Trail. This allows walkers to put together their own tour, depending on their physical condition and the time available. For overnight guests staying at Grundmühle Krippen (where there is barrier-free accommodation), the route is also suitable as a short detour into the town.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

This tour is particularly recommended when the sun is shining, two hours before or after midday. This is when most sundials are "in operation".

Quiz question: Who will discover the sundial where a simple house corner is used for astronomical time measurement?
