Walk on the Königstein Fortress along the battlement with views in all directions as far as Dresden and over the Saxon Switzerland.

The (admission-required) visit to Königstein Fortress can be perfectly combined with a panoramic route directly on the rock edge of the table mountain under good weather conditions, as on the mountain plateau the Postenweg connects all the upper structures of the fortress wall. Although the uneven, not always paved ground includes some short and not too steep ascents/descents and several rather narrow passages, these should be manageable - if necessary with appropriate assistance from companions. The view through the arrow slits to the foot of the fortification and over the nearby surroundings is just as impressive as the comprehensive 360° panorama which is gradually revealed during the walk.

Directions

After purchasing entrance tickets at the counter, you immediately go next door into the interior of the mountain and take the large freight elevator (operated by your elevator attendant) to the fortress plateau. The further course of the circular route is predetermined by the fortress wall. If the sometimes quite narrow Postenweg becomes too tight, there is often the possibility to bypass the passage on an alternative route further inside. Otherwise, the return path and the subsequent drive to the following viewpoints via the connecting paths from the center of the fortress plateau remain. However, the northwest section of the circular route between Friedrichsburg and the building complex above the fortress gate (gatehouse) has several steps at three different places (sometimes around a tight corner) and is also a very narrow passage, so it is not accessible by wheelchair. However, a short detour on this section opens a nice view over the Elbe valley with Friedrichsburg. At the end, you should definitely walk through the central fortress grounds past the well house to the Horn with the Seigerturm, as from here you look directly down onto the fortifications protecting the historical access to the fortress. Finally, you easily reach the large terrace with smooth sandstone slabs and the freight elevator again, which brings you down to the parking lot.

Additional information

Although not all buildings and thus exhibitions are currently accessible without barriers, the visit is still worthwhile for museum lovers. In addition, open-air events take place repeatedly within the fortress grounds. Particularly popular is the historic Christmas market during Advent. Wheelchair users can also reach the casemates restaurant, located somewhat deeper within the fortress wall, via an intermediate station of the large freight elevator. The location of accessible toilets is shown on the wheelchair user plan of the fortress.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

Instead of completing the entire circular route, various viewpoints, e.g. the Blitzeichen plateau or the view from the Seigerturm, can also be reached directly, as most paths on the fortress plateau are without stairs or steps. Further information including a circular route plan for wheelchair users can be found at "Barrier-free fortress".
