The starting point is the Porschdorf stop or the parking lot at Polenztal in Porschdorf. Here begins our path (blue line) into the Tiefen Grund. Along the Tiefen Grund stream, the path winds, sometimes going up a bit and then back down to the stream. Later we turn left and hike (blue line) up the Brand steps. About 850 steps and 150 strenuous meters of elevation lie between the Tiefen Grund at Porschdorf and the rock plateau high above. The "Brand" is the name of this area since the plateau, along with the surrounding forests, was on fire in the 18th century. We hike on historic paths. The Brand steps are part of the classic route of the Malerweg through the Saxon Switzerland. The artists were drawn by the dramatic nature of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains: bizarre rock sculptures, gorge-green ravines and majestic table mountains left deep impressions and consequently such works were created.
After the ascent, we continue towards Brandbaude – here we stand at the edge of the slope. Like on a balcony, only the railing separates us from the land, the table mountains in the distance, and the deep canyon of the Polenz below us. The Brand view is considered one of the most beautiful views in Saxon Switzerland. The historic ensemble of the Brand-Baude consists of a restaurant, accommodation, and national park information center.
From here we walk a bit on Brandstraße (blue line) and soon turn left following the red line marking down the Schulzengrund into the Polenztal. In the valley we go left (red dot) and stay on the river side to get back to the starting point.
