Directions
- From the spa town of Gohrisch, the Muselweg, the Jagdsteig, the Königsweg, and the Alte Schulweg lead you to Pfaffendorf. You’ll climb the Pfaffenstein through the narrow “eye of the needle,” a steep ascent via wooden and iron stairs. You’ll hike down toward Quirl along the Klammweg. At the Pfaffendorf sports field, the Malerweg Elbsandsteingebirge trail leads you to Königstein. You’ll pass the town church and walk along the Latzweg to the foot of Königstein Fortress. You should plan on an extra 2 hours for a visit to the fortress. Follow the old fortress road and the Kanonenweg to Thürmsdorf. You’ll pass through the village, walk past an old castle and the Malerweg Chapel at the Alexander-Thiele viewpoint, and hike along the edge of the forest to Weißig.

Hiking with your dog:
One obstacle is the comparatively steep, step-filled, and at times narrow Pfaffenstein ascent through the “eye of the needle,” which also involves climbing iron ladders. Here, hikers with dogs should opt for the easier ascent, which, while it also has stone and wooden steps, does not include ladders and is not as steep.

This mountain fortress, over 400 years old, is today a unique example of European fortress architecture. More than 50 historic structures and extensive green spaces invite you to embark on the “Fortress” adventure.
