Directions

Our route starts in Hinterhermsdorf and initially takes us on the National Park Cycle Route towards Rabensteine. We soon pass the Buchenparkhalle. Anyone wanting can take a detour to the Upper Lock – however, the gorge is not directly accessible by bike. The main path continues downhill on the National Park Cycle Route to the Kirnitzsch, which we follow to the border with the Czech Republic.

Shortly after crossing the border, we follow Cycle Route No. 3030 on a well-graveled forest path. At a wooden figure commemorating soldiers who traveled through the region along the Bohemian Road, we turn left onto Cycle Route No. 3029. We continue towards Na Tokáni (Balzhütten), where there is the first opportunity for refreshments.

Now the first climb is behind us, and we pass an information point of the Bohemian Switzerland National Park. We continue across the road and after a scenic ride roll into the picturesque village of Doubice. This spa town with its beautiful half-timbered houses tells a rich history: in the Middle Ages, one of Bohemia's oldest glassworks was operated here, later the textile industry shaped the region. Today, besides numerous inns, there is also a curious place where old Eastern Bloc tanks meet carved wooden sculptures.

We continue on Cycle Route No. 3029 towards Kyjov. We turn left at a curve onto Cycle Route No. 3031. Those who wish can ride a bit further along the road to the Khaatalsperre reservoir – a welcome refreshment, especially in warm temperatures. Admission is free.

On Cycle Route No. 3031, we now ride once again through the forest, which on this route is generally shaped by forest restructuring. The surface varies between gravel, a short section of paved path, and asphalt.

We pass more wooden sculptures that recount the death march of prisoners from a concentration camp who died shortly before the end of the war. Shortly after, we descend steeply back towards the Kirnitzsch. Our brakes have a lot to do. Once in the valley, we cross the border and return to Saxony, where we rejoin the German section of the Kirnitzsch cycle path. The last section leads us back to Hinterhermsdorf. Without an e-bike, there is one last strenuous climb awaiting.
