The Kirnitzsch Cycle Route connects Saxony and Bohemia and follows the course of the Kirnitzsch from its source near Krásná Lípa in the Czech Republic to Bad Schandau on the Elbe. The route leads through the idyllic Kyjovské údolí (Khaatal) and passes small villages, dense forests and impressive sandstone cliffs of Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland. After crossing the border at Zadní Doubice, the trail follows the picturesque Kirnitzsch Valley, past old mills, the Lichtenhain waterfall and the historic Kirnitzsch Valley Railway. Again and again, you are treated to magnificent views of the rocky landscape and unspoiled nature. Numerous rest stops and inns along the route invite you to linger. The Kirnitzsch cycle path offers a unique experience of nature and combines cultural and scenic highlights from both countries - perfect for anyone who wants to actively discover the beauty of the border region. The end point is where the Kirnitzsch flows into the Elbe in Bad Schandau.
The Kirnitzsch Valley Railway runs at regular intervals between the Lichtenhain waterfall and the Bad Schandau spa gardens. Please watch out for the tracks on the road and the traffic!
The cycle tour along the Kirnitzsch is suitable for trekking bikes, mountain bikes and gravel bikes, with or without a motor. Road bikes only get their money's worth from the road in the Kirnitzsch valley.
How to get there:
The train journey from Bad Schandau to Krásná Lípa takes approx. 1.5 hours. Tickets can be purchased on the train, at the ticket machine or at the RVSOE Service Center at Bad Schandau National Park Station. You can pay in cash or by card on the train. We recommend taking cash with you.
Adults pay 3.90€ for a single journey to Rumburk, 27 CZK (approx. 1,10€) and for the bicycle 100 CZK (4,00€; this is the Elbe-Labe bicycle ticket, valid in the entire VVO and DUK area*). For children up to the age of 18, a one-way ticket costs €2.10, students up to the age of 26 and senior citizens aged 65 and over pay €3.20. You can also obtain detailed information by calling 03501 7111-999.
Departure:
*The VVO network area refers to the German side, the DUK network area includes the Ústí district on the Czech side. The Elbe-Labe-Ticket is valid for both. This is worthwhile for longer day trips in the border region. We recommend purchasing individual tickets for this cycle tour. The Elbe-Labe bike ticket is valid all day. You can also find more information about tickets in Bohemian Switzerland here.
The Kirnitzsch cycle path runs through the Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland National Parks. Please do not leave the path and follow the rules for cycling in the national park and help to ensure that the national park remains a habitat for plants, animals and people. Thank you for your consideration!
