Below Sonnenstein Castle, you can stroll along terraces with different designs.
The terraced gardens were laid out on the walls of the old city fortifications after the Seven Years' War. Originally used as recreational areas for the sanatorium and nursing home, they now combine garden art with the city's history.
Eleven garden levels, one above the other, present different themes: including rose, lavender and wine terraces, fruit orchards and evergreen areas. Several vantage points offer sweeping views over the old town of Pirna and the Elbe Valley.
The gardens were renovated in 2012 and have been open to the public ever since. It is complemented by an accessible walkway along the old defensive wall. Guided tours of the bastions and gardens are offered seasonally.
