There has been a mountain inn at this location for about 200 years. Anyone who wants to explore the national park simply must visit the “Brand-Baude” with its spectacular view of the table mountains. The spot known as “Brand,” located above the Polenz Valley, was first developed as a rest stop 250 years ago with two buildings—both of which still stand today. Since 2009, the Baude has been one of the first National Park partners.
Today, the mountain restaurant—which has become known as the “Balcony of Saxon Switzerland”—welcomes guests year-round, every day, and in any weather.
The menu features not only regional specialties such as Galloway beef from Waitzdorf, potatoes from Stürza, goat cheese from Lauterbach, or trout from Rathmannsdorf on the menu; the Baude team also collaborates with producers from Saxony when selecting beverages. A particular highlight is Rechenberger beer from the brewery in Rechenberg-Bienenmühle, which has been in operation for 200 years and continues to this day.
And while the adult guests leaf through the latest daily newspapers and magazines or read in the small library, the younger guests enjoy the petting zoo with its goats.
Those who want to admire the beauty of nature for longer can stay overnight in one of the guest rooms with a shower or in the sleeping bag accommodations at the hiking hostel. As a result, the mountain restaurant has become a popular destination for groups and celebrations of all kinds. We especially recommend the new vacation apartments with balconies and the new vacation home in Haus Rosel, which accommodates 18 people.
In winter, guests are invited to enjoy cozy evenings by the wood-burning stove. The summer choir concerts are also consistently well-received.
And the Brand-Baude has one more special feature to offer. The log cabin—one of the oldest buildings in the area—has housed an information center for the “Saxon Switzerland” National Park for several years, designed to assist visitors in exploring the area in the heart of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.
