Gohrisch
In the spell of the table mountains
The municipality of Gohrisch is located in a peaceful, wooded, and climatically balanced area on a plateau to the left of the Elbe River. Nearby, in the Elbe Valley, lie the towns of Bad Schandau and Königstein. The Elbe Sandstone Mountains are unique in Europe with their isolated table mountains. The Gohrisch(stein), the Papststein, and Kleinhennersdorfer Stein, Kohlbornstein, Spitzstein, and Katzstein are situated right in the middle of the Gohrisch municipality.
The distinctive table mountains Lilienstein and Pfaffenstein, as well as the Königstein Fortress, are not only visible from here but also accessible for hiking. A well-marked network of hiking trails caters to a wide range of preferences.
A hidden gem is the forest pool with a playground located in the district of Cunnersdorf.
The district of Kurort Gohrisch has been known and popular as a "summer retreat and climatic health resort" since the Gründerzeit.
It was this idyllic setting that inspired the world-renowned composer Dmitri Shostakovich to compose his string quartet here in July 1960. In his honor, the International Shostakovich Days have been held annually since 2010, organized by the Saxon State Orchestra Dresden and various esteemed guests, turning the spa town into a stage.
