Easily accessible castle ruins with a viewpoint and cozy refreshment stop in the Lusatian Mountains.
The ruins of Tolštejn Castle rise 670 meters above Jiřetín pod Jedlovou in Bohemian Switzerland. The castle was built in the 13th or 14th century and first mentioned in a document in 1337. For a long time, it served to secure important trade routes between Bohemia and Upper Lusatia.
The castle was destroyed in 1642 during the Thirty Years' War. Remains of the walls and a small viewing platform with sweeping views over northern Bohemia, Upper Lusatia and the Lusatian Mountains have been preserved.
A mountain inn with an outdoor area is located on the castle slope. The castle ruins are easily accessible via several marked hiking trails and are often combined with a visit to the nearby Jedlová lookout tower.
