Saxon Switzerland provides a small but exclusive range of winter sport options which are particularly popular among families and beginners.

The winter sport resorts of Sebnitz, Rugiswalde and Hinterhermsdorf offer facilities for cross country and alpine skiing, snowboarding and bobsleighing. The degree of difficulty of the ski trails ranges from easy to moderate and thus provides good conditions for beginners and advanced skiers as well as for families. Thanks to snow-making facilities optimal ski fun is possible even if snowfall lacks and floodlights allow nighttime winter sports.

The town of Sebnitz, well-known for its local craft of silk flower making, provides three alpine ski pistes of a total length of 1.8 km. They are located on the slopes of Buchberg and Räumicht Mountains and are furnished with surface lifts. One of the slopes allows descents at night thanks to 14,000 Watt floodlight facilities.

Cross-country skiers get their money’s worth on around 10 km of ski trails at Buchberg Mountain in Sebnitz Forest. In addition, there is a 200 m long bobsleigh slope of moderate difficulty. Ski equipment rental is possible at Räumicht Ski Clubhouse (Skiheim) where snacks are also available. And why not have a sensual après-ski experience with aroma baths and infusions in the Dr. Petzold Kräutervitalbad (Vital Herb Spa) in the town of Sebnitz.

Rugiswalde: Snow Bar and Snow Cannon

Thanks to snow-making facilities the 450 m long ski slope in Rugiswalde Village near Neustadt with its double drag lift consistently provides the best conditions throughout the winter. Here too, floodlights allow the slope to be used at night as well.

There is a snow bar providing snacks as well as ski and snowboard rental area and a ski school. A particularly easy 70 m long separate descent allows children to let off steam here and be completely undisturbed.

If enough snow has fallen ski trails are prepared around the village of Rugiswalde. Cross country-skiers then have the choice between three loop routes of differing lengths. There are also two easy bobsleigh descents of a total length of 300 m. Another popular sleighing hill is to be found at Götzinger’s Height in the town of Neustadt.

Hinterhermsdorf: Skiing - cross-country and cross-border

The picture-perfect village of Hinterhermsdorf situated directly at the border of the National Park is particularly attractive for idyllic cross-country skiing pleasure.

There are about 15 km of groomed trails in total. Sections of easy and moderate degrees of difficulty are well manageable for beginners, too. The sign-posted trailheads are located at Buchenparkhalle Car Park and at a car park in the village centre (Ortsmitte). The trail starting near the pedestrian border check point to Mikulàšovice (Nixdorf) and Tomàšov (Thomasdorf) lead into the Czech Republic. Here you should definitely have your passport or identity card on you. This also applies to children.  A winter sports map with ski trail routings and catering facilities along the way is available in the tourist information point at “Haus des Gastes”. Ski rentals are possible in Hinterhermsdorf Village, too.

Gohrisch: Cross country skiing below table mountains

When woods and rocks are covered with snow Saxon Switzerland looks like a fairy tale scenery. Also in Gohrisch Village, a picturesque climatic health resort, cross-country skis and bobsleighs are the best means of transport in the cold season. Winter enthusiasts can go not only for winter hiking but also cross country skiing in the immediate vicinity of the table mountains Papststein, Gohrisch, and Pfaffenstein. No matter if the trails are groomed or not, sports and fun with great views on the table mountains are guaranteed, provided there is enough snow.
