Lohmen Meißner Hochland stop
Market square in the town of Wehlen
The tour starts at the Lohmen Meißner Hochland bus stop. From there, follow the Malerweg trail on the left-hand footpath for approx. 150 m along Basteistraße. At the Friedenseiche – a small square with a striking tree – turn right into Uttewalder Straße and cross the village.
Once you reach the Latzenstraße/Wehlener Straße intersection, continue straight ahead on the unpaved Brückwaldweg. The Malerweg trail is marked all the way to Stadt Wehlen. At the end of Brückwaldweg, turn right onto Schleifgrund.
The destination is the Uttewalder Felsentor – a narrow gorge with huge boulders. Caspar David Friedrich stayed here for several days in 1800 and sketched his impressions. Before the Elbtalbahn railway was built in 1851, the route from Pillnitz via Graupa, Liebethaler Grund, Lohmen and Uttewalder Grund to the Bastei was considered the most important access route to Saxon Switzerland.
Where the Uttewalder Grund ends at Wettinweg, turn left. Depending on the weather conditions, a detour to the Teufelskammer (Devil's Chamber) in the Teufelsschlüchten (Devil's Gorges) is recommended.
The Wehlener Grund gradually descends to the town of Wehlen. The route leads past the ruins of Wehlen Castle (the view over the Elbe Valley is well worth it) to the market square, where the tour ends.
The return journey can be made either by ferry (runs as required) across the Elbe and then by S-Bahn, or alternatively by bus directly from the market square.
