None other than the man who put Back Saxon Switzerland on the map, Pastor Wilhelm Leberecht Götzinger, remarked that when visiting Hinterhermsdorf, one’s first stop should be the Weifberg to revel in the enchanting view.

Directions

We start our hike from the trailhead (parking lot/bus stop in Hinterhermsdorf, Erbgericht) and head north toward Weifberg (blue trail, Weifbergstraße, then Nixdorfer Straße). The yellow marker later leads us to the base of the 32-meter-high observation tower on the Weifberg, which has 173 steps. It offers a magnificent panoramic view of the natural and cultural landscape of the Hintere Sächsische Schweiz, stretching far into Bohemia. Our tour continues down the Weifberg (red line toward Schäferräumicht). We hike across an open area and, at the next fork, keep left onto a road (Folgenweg, yellow and red lines). We head down into the valley to an intersection, where we turn left (Bammelweg, yellow line). At first, the trail goes uphill and later downhill into the Weißbach Valley. We continue to follow the yellow trail (on the right) along the valley toward Hinterhermsdorf.

In this section, the Weißbach also forms the border with the Czech Republic. Soon, the stream flows into the Kirnitzsch.

At the next intersection, we keep to the right and follow the signpost toward Hinterhermsdorf (yellow line). Once we’re back in the forest, we continue straight ahead on the trail until we reach the road. We continue walking uphill along this road (keeping to the right). At the next signpost, we turn slightly left and continue along the bike path. After a few meters, we turn left at the house and walk downhill. We keep to the right to cross the stream. Now we follow the trail further uphill. In the forest, we keep to the left but continue walking uphill. We then continue across the meadow and turn right onto the road. At the next intersection, we turn right onto Panoramaweg (yellow dot) and immediately take the dirt road on the left. We then continue straight ahead on the road. Next, we turn right onto Oberdorgweg (yellow dot) and walk straight ahead, passing the yellow house on our left. We then arrive back at the signpost and our starting point.
