From Weesenstein Castle via the Planet Trail along the Mülglitz to Köttewitz and back
Take a deep breath and find peace: What a healing effect well-maintained parks and gardens have on us! There are several of them in Saxon Switzerland. A rather hidden gem is the park of Weesenstein Castle in the Mülglitz valley. This remarkable jewel of historical garden culture is also the start and end point of the Weesenstein circular route and with a duration of 1.5 hours is perfectly suited for a relaxed walk.
From Weesenstein Castle, the path first leads along the Planet Trail always next to the Mülglitz. At regular intervals, there are always interesting information boards about the planets. Shortly after crossing the railway crossing, the path leads right into a hollow up to Köttewitz. After a short distance through the small village, past beautiful garden layouts, the route continues over a field path to a small wood. The following descent back to Weesenstein Castle offers repeatedly wonderful views down into the valley to the picturesque park area.
At the end of the circuit, of course, the visit of this area should not be missed. The Weesenstein Castle park is not the product of a single, absolutist masterstroke – as with the garden art in Großsedlitz – but a long development spanning several centuries. Since the course of the Mülglitz was changed in the meantime, the area has since been divided into a small and a large castle park. A bridge with the monogram of King Johann connects the two parts. In the small castle park, benches around a fountain and in a rhododendron grove invite you to linger. The large castle park is characterized by avenues and a pergola leading to a pavilion. Highlights are a statue of the flower goddess Flora and a marble column commemorating the golden wedding anniversary of King Johann and Queen Amalie Auguste.
