Directions

The loop trail starts at the market square, which is unusually shaped like a triangle. You’ll pass a historic postal milestone and follow the route marked with a red line up to the church and city hall. The trail continues slightly uphill to the “Rotes Vorwerk,” a farm with its own cheese dairy.

Soon you’ll reach the ridge of the Eastern Ore Mountains and turn left toward Berthelsdorf, passing a “martyr’s column.” A sign describes the legend associated with it. The view from here of the Erzgebirge Mountains and Bohemia is fantastic. At the Landgasthof Berthelsdorf, two landladies serve authentic home-style cooking made with ingredients from the garden, as well as fresh eggs and meat from the farm. A playground next door offers children something to do.

Now the trail leads downhill back to Liebstadt and to Kuckuckstein Castle. Kuckuckstein was built in the mid-16th century and has seen many owners come and go. Napoleon was once a guest here. Kuckuckstein has appeared on television several times, for example, in the 2015 film adaptation of *Snow White and Rose Red*. Passing the castle, the trail winds down narrow paths back into the valley and returns to the starting point.
