The circular route starts at the marketplace, which is unusually shaped like a triangle. You pass a historic postal milestone and follow the route marked with a red line up to the church and the town hall. It continues gently uphill to the "Red Vorwerk", a farm with its own cheese dairy.
Soon you reach the ridge of the Eastern Ore Mountains and turn left towards Berthelsdorf, passing a “martyr's column”. A sign describes the associated legend. The view from here into the Ore Mountains and Bohemia is fantastic. At the Berthelsdorf country inn, two hostesses serve genuine home-style cooking with ingredients from the garden as well as fresh eggs and meat from the farm. A playground next door offers children a change of pace.
Now the path leads downhill back to Liebstadt and to Kuckuckstein Castle. Kuckuckstein was built in the mid-16th century and has seen many owners come and go. Napoleon was once a guest here. Kuckuckstein has appeared on television several times, for example in the 2015 film adaptation of Snow White and Rose Red. Past the castle, narrow paths lead back down into the valley and to the starting point.
