Stones full of sound
Classical music and sandstone backdrops come together at the "Sandstone and music" festival to create a truly special cultural experience.
"Sandstone and music" – the name says it all. The chiefly voluntarily organised festival has been inviting guests to attend special concert experiences at various sandstone locations in Saxon Switzerland since 1992. From antique church ruins to quarries: The ambience of the venues creates a truly special cultural experience.
Cultural highlights from March to December
"Sandstone and music" offers a top quality music programme spanning ten months of the year. This programme is rich in contrast and features internationally sought-after soloists and ensembles. In addition, the festival includes regular pre-concerts with trainee musicians from the region in order to promote up-and-coming musicians from the area.
Initiator: Ludwig Güttler
"Sandstone and music" was created by Ludwig Güttler, one of the most profiled soloists from the current era. It was his trumpet playing that first made him famous; however Ludwig Güttler has since long been known in the music world as a conductor and musicologist. He plays in and conducts the "Virtuosi Saxoniae" chamber orchestra, which he himself founded. He embodies the Saxon music tradition more than any other and, as musical director, he gives the "Sandstone and music" festival its inimitable character.
