Cultural Treasures between Rugged Rocks

The Elbe Sandstone Mountains are steeped in a long and fascinating cultural history. European history was made here in the midst of idyllic nature and along important trade routes. And it is present to this day in the local castles, gardens and forts. Later, the paintings, poems and compositions of the Romantic artists made the area world-famous. Sights and points of interest remind of it everywhere in the area. But contemporary art is not neglected either.

Three good reasons

why holidays in Saxon Switzerland are never boring:

  • Elbe sandstone is the backdrop for Europe’s most beautiful open air theatre, wonderful musical festivals, dedicated small companies’ stage performances and many other cultural events.

  • Prestigious castles, legendary forts and picturesque gardens: In Saxon Switzerland historic monuments encounter spectacular nature.

  • The variety of themes that Saxon Switzerland’s museums are dedicated to can be overwhelming. Themes range from local history to artists’ works and lives to prehistoric fauna and flora.

„Every day we should hear at least one little song, read one good poem, see one exquisite picture, and, if possible, speak a few sensible words.”
- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
