Stolpen
An excursion through the centuries
The idyllic small town of Stolpen, situated near Dresden, invites visitors to experience Saxon history up close, both on a grand and a small scale, through a wealth of attractions.
An excursion through the centuries – under this motto, the castle town of Stolpen, along with its districts Langenwolmsdorf, Helmsdorf, Lauterbach, Rennersdorf-Neudörfel, and Heeselicht, welcomes its guests.
Stolpen has become famous primarily for its castle and the tragic fate of a fascinating woman: Anna Constantia von Cosel. The most renowned mistress of Augustus the Strong was imprisoned at Stolpen Castle for 49 years.
A defining feature of the entire town is the natural monument Stolpen Columnar Basalt. Approximately 25 million years ago, volcanic lava solidified here into particularly beautiful, slender columns. At 82 meters, the castle well is the deepest natural stone basalt well on earth! The name "basalt" was first used for the blackish-blue columns of Stolpen. From here, the name spread around the world.
The small town of Stolpen, on the northern slope of the castle hill, enchants with its romantic flair. Lovingly restored buildings and squares transport visitors back to times when traveling was still done by carriage. Furthermore, the castle town of Stolpen is the ideal starting point for exploring high-profile sights in the surrounding area: the rocky landscape of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, the Saxon state capital Dresden, the castles and vineyards of the Saxon Elbe region, as well as the charming towns and landscapes of Upper Lusatia are practically right on the doorstep...
