On the trail of Richard Wagner through the wild and romantic Liebethaler Grund to the (derelict) Lochmühle. Right next to it is the world's largest monument to the composer.

When Richard Wagner retreated to Graupa during his work on the opera Lohengrin in 1846 in order to have peace and quiet for his composition, he also went on several hikes in the nearby Liebethaler Grund. It is said that this romantic valley was also a source of inspiration for him. Today, the Malerweg trail leads along here, and near the now ruined Lochmühle mill, the impressive Wagner memorial created by Professor Richard Guhr bears witness to the composer's stay. The varied hike through the shady, cool valley is particularly recommended after a long dry spell and in hot midsummer. If the ascent on sandstone paving from Lochmühle to Mühlsdorf is too steep for you, you can also take the same route for the return journey.

Directions

The soft forest floor at the start, especially after rain, makes it advisable for escorts to help with the pushing.  Immediately before the ruins of the former Copitz power station, the path leads past towering rocks to a long bridge over its moat. Two relatively high steps have to be climbed to reach the wide footbridge - wheelchair users will definitely need assistance! The route then continues without difficulty to the Richard Wagner memorial directly in front of the now ruined Lochmühle mill. Nevertheless, it is worth making a short detour to the bridge over the Wesenitz behind the Lochmühle, because from here you can see a water cascade that has even been immortalised by Romantic artists in their drawings. The most strenuous section of the tour is undoubtedly the steep climb up to Mühlsdorf on a sandstone-paved path. The gradient during these 100 metres or so may be between 12 and 14 percent. Once at the top, we first walk along the village road, which becomes a cycle path after an allotment site, back to Liebethal with its village church, which is well worth seeing. Finally, the route leads a few hundred metres along a public road back down to the starting point of our hike.

Additional information

Note: On the square in front of the composer's monument there is a sound station which, when activated by the visitor, plays the overture to his opera Lohengrin. An unforgettable experience in this romantic setting!

Recommended: The walk can be combined very well (also thematically) with a visit to the Richard Wagner sites in Graupa, the exhibition in the hunting lodge is completely barrier-free and there is also a disabled toilet in the building.
