Well-known and therefore heavily frequented excursion for guests of Saxon Switzerland. After all, this is one of the most popular tourist centers in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, where impressive rock formations rise up right above the Elbe and also above the houses of the picturesque spa town of Rathen. Especially attractive on hot summer days is the contrast between the water of the lake in the cool Amselgrund and the climbing peaks on sunlit rock ridges.

Directions
From the S-Bahn station spa town Rathen, go to the ferry (parking lot), with which we cross to the other side of the Elbe. Both the short steep climb from the ferry (about 10%) and an equally short steep section (about 12%) two hundred meters further at the junction to the Amselgrund are best managed with the support of companions. The path is then relatively flat through the town until shortly before the entrance/ticket office to the Rathen open-air stage, where rough sandstone pavement replaces concrete stones and asphalt pavement. Although partially milled, this is still quite difficult to traverse at times. From the promenade along the Amselsee, there are repeatedly beautiful views of distinctive climbing peaks in the Rathen rock landscape, such as "Locomotive", "Valley Watchman", "Monk". Return by the same route.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author
This route suggestion can also be combined with a short detour on the promenade or the Elbe cycle path from the spa town of Rathen to Stadt Wehlen.
Safety guidelines
The large cable ferry across the Elbe is accessible via small mobile ramps, e.g. also for electric wheelchairs and handbikes. If necessary, these are laid out by the ferry operators on the landing stage.
The incline/decline of the path to and from the landing stage is about 6% on the station side and about 10% on the opposite river bank. At the "Amselseeschlößchen" restaurant, the street paved with concrete stones is about 12% steep over approximately 50 m.
