Easy yet scenic route from Kurort Rathen via the foot of the Rauenstein to Stadt Wehlen.
Kurort Rathen, parking lot Oberrathen
Stadt Wehlen, district Pötzscha
The hike begins at the parking lot in Oberrathen on the left bank side of the Elbe. After crossing the railway crossing, we follow the path marked with the "Red Line" on a white background and ascend to the Laase. From this plateau, there is an impressive view of the Bastei massif with the Bastei Bridge. Continue on the same marking to the ascent to the Rauenstein.
In dry weather - without ice and snow - this route can be taken over the ridge path of the Rauenstein. This is more scenic and challenging, as it partially leads over ladders, compared to the route described here.
However, assuming it is a winter hike that requires wintry weather, we remain below the Rauenstein and turn right at the next fork. If the "Red Line" marking branches off to the left, we continue straight ahead. Upon reaching the Wehlen district of Pötzscha, the question remains: how to get back to Kurort Rathen?
Option 1: Take the S-Bahn one stop
Option 2: Hike along the Elbe bike path back to Kurort Rathen (approx. 4 km)
Access via federal road B172 towards Bad Schandau - follow the signs to Kurort Rathen in Pirna-Sonnenstein - continue via Struppen, Thürmsdorf, Weißig to Kurort Rathen
Parking lot at the Elbe in Oberrathen
