The start of the route is at Kurort Rathen station. After crossing with the ferry, follow the "red dot" and signs uphill to the Bastei Bridge. Along the way, there are several viewpoints worth visiting.
At the Berghotel Bastei, the signs point the way to the Schwedenlöcher. Just before that is the worthwhile pavilion viewpoint. The descent through the Schwedenlöcher takes place over many steps. The gorge served as a hideout for locals during the Thirty Years' War, hence the name.
Upon reaching the bottom at Amselgrund, continue right and then turn left over the bridge into the Höllgrund. From here, follow the marking with the green stripe. The Knotenweg leads uphill. After crossing Ziegenrückstraße, Knotenweg continues until it meets the Malerweg. Follow this to the right to the Hockstein viewpoint. There is a tic-tac-toe game carved into the rock, and you also have views of Hohnstein Castle and the Polenz valley.
Descend through the spectacular Wolfsschlucht with many stairs into the Polenz valley. In the valley, continue right. A stop at the Polenztal inn is optional. The fairly easy path now follows the "red dot" along the Polenz.
At a fork, the Füllhölzelweg turns right, crossing Ziegenrückstraße again and meets the "red stripe" marking. Follow this until the Gamrigweg branches off to the left. The path leads to the summit of the Gamrig table mountain with beautiful views. After the descent, return via the Aspichgraben towards Kurort Rathen. At the tourist info, keep right towards the Elbe, take the ferry, and return to the station.
