Via Ferrata Děčín (Via Ferrata Pastýřská stěna, Czech Republic)

Climbing
Free via ferrata in the city center with secured routes and views of the Elbe and Děčín Castle.
In Bohemian Switzerland, the via ferrata is located on the Schäferwand near the center of Děčín. It was opened in April 2014.

A total of 16 routes with varying levels of difficulty are available. The climb is accessible free of charge and is suitable for fit people without climbing experience. Older children can also climb it, provided they are suitably equipped and accompanied.

The climb offers impressive views of the Elbe Valley, the town of Děčín and the castle opposite. A special element is a short suspension bridge that connects two rocky areas and makes the via ferrata even more varied. The approach is directly from the banks of the Elbe and is well signposted.

According to the operating regulations, full via ferrata equipment is mandatory, even if you climb at your own risk. You will need a seat and chest harness or alternatively a full body harness, a flat nylon loop for connection, a via ferrata brake and a climbing helmet. Via ferrata gloves are helpful, but not essential, and equipment can be hired on site.

Ferrata access is dependent on the weather and is not permitted in the rain or on wet or icy rock faces for safety reasons. A traffic light on the website indicates whether the via ferrata can be used depending on the weather.

Good to know

Openings

Always open except when wet.

Sandstone is particularly sensitive in wet conditions. To protect the rock and the safety devices, the via ferrata is temporarily closed in wet weather. The city police monitor compliance with this regulation, and violations can be punished with a fine. In sunny and windy weather, reopening is often possible within 12 to 24 hours after the rain. Current information can be found on the website.

Price info

Climbing equipment can be hired for a fee at ACTIVE POINT DĚČÍN, directly at the foot of the via ferrata.
