Once we reach Tafelberg, we’re treated to a magnificent view toward Pfaffenstein. By the time the goats start leaping around on the rocks, there’s no doubt left about their climbing abilities—and it makes for some great photo opportunities. Sometimes there’s even an opportunity to hear the herder play a short tune on the jaw harp.
After a short break and a taste of the “Elbe-Ziegen-Knacker,” the descent begins. After returning the animals to the pasture, there’s still time for more one-on-one conversations.
Depending on the size of the group, two or more goats will accompany us. They’ll be led on a rope, which requires the utmost attention from the human guide. Participants take turns leading the goats on their own, and you’re also welcome to simply watch the fun unfold.
The hike takes place in coordination with Sachsenforst Neustadt.
For eight years now, a handful of Thuringian Forest goats have been accompanying me (patu radFeld, aka Patrick Pietsch) on my life’s journey.
I’d like to introduce these versatile animals to others by offering goat hikes in Saxon Switzerland.
While traveling around, I gained a lot of experience working with goats and sheep as a farmhand on both organic and conventional family-run farms in the Saxon Switzerland/Eastern Ore Mountains region. I’d like to share the enthusiasm I’ve developed for these animals with others—not least through the projects.
The animals graze on historic cultural landscapes, primarily on slopes, to preserve the atmosphere of Saxon Switzerland.
Customized goat hikes for groups of 10 to 20 people are available.
Please note that the photos and video footage have been edited; the goats are not led without a lead rope in the Saxon Switzerland National Park region.
