Tour description
- Day 1: Individual arrival in Zittau
In the former cloth-making and trading town in the border triangle, a visit to the Cultural History Museum in the Franciscan monastery and the museum "Church of the Holy Cross" is worthwhile, where the famous Great Zittau Lenten Veil of 1472 can be seen in the largest museum display case in the world – a fascinating testament to biblical storytelling. Overnight stay in Zittau - Day 2: Zittau - Löbau (approx. 39 km | 520 m elevation gain)
Pure gravel biking: On the fifth stage, a mix of dense forests, wide landscapes, bumpy tracks and fast asphalt sections awaits you – a real experience for gravel fans.
From Zittau, you head via trails and meadow paths into the UNESCO World Heritage town of Herrnhut. It is known for its historical importance as the center of the Moravian Church and the world-famous "Herrnhut Stars", which can be found in many houses, especially at Christmas time. After about 15 km, the ascent to the Löbauer Berg will challenge your strength once more, but the view from the 35m-high King Frederick Augustus Tower (Eiserner Turm) makes up for the effort. The final meters to Löbau then take you on a steep descent to the stage destination. Overnight stay in Löbau - Day 3: Löbau - Schirgiswalde - Sohland an der Spree (approx. 32 km | 450 m elevation gain)
Race track & climbing mountain: The blue stage starts with a relaxed section on the Upper Lusatia cycle path, where you can cycle enjoyably through the landscape of Upper Lusatia without much up and down and without car traffic.
Then it's up the mountain "Czorneboh" (556 m), with magnificent panoramic views. The descent takes you steeply downhill to Cunewalde, known for the largest village church in Germany. In Schirgiswalde, you leave the Rockhead route and cycle on the Spree cycle path for approx. 5 km to Sohland an der Spree. Overnight stay in Sohland - Day 4: Sohland an der Spree - Großschönau (approx. 18 km)
Gravel, asphalt & village idyll: The red stage continues through a varied landscape characterized by gravel paths, asphalt roads and the charm of small villages.
Here, gentle ascents and descents alternate, so that the route is never boring, but constantly opens up new perspectives and views. At the beginning, you dive into the forests of Upper Lusatia, where rough gravel paths wind through the quiet nature. As you continue, you will discover picturesque villages that look like they are from another time. The traditional half-timbered houses (Umgebindehäuser), typical of this region, give the route a very special charm. Along the way, you pass places like Beiersdorf and Kottmarsdorf, with its striking post mill, which invites you to take photos and marvel. Pay attention along the way to the sources of the Spree that you pass – a fascinating moment when you realize that this is the origin of a river that will later reach the capital city of Berlin much wider. Your stage destination is the textile village of Großschönau, known for its long history of textile production. A special highlight is the German Damast and Terry Museum in Großschönau. Overnight stay in Großschönau - Day 5: Großschönau - Zittau (approx. 32 km | 610 m elevation gain)
The border crossing: The black stage, with its demanding sections, poses the biggest challenge of the Rockhead. The route begins in Großschönau and leads steadily uphill via Waltersdorf to the spa town of Johnsdorf.
From here it becomes more demanding, especially in the border area with the Czech Republic and Poland. The ascent to the Johannisstein leads on narrow trails and grass paths. It continues with a steep, asphalt route up to the Hochwald (749 m), the highest point of the Zittau Mountains, from which, in good weather, you have an impressive distant view as far as Zittau and the Jizera Mountains. After this highlight, it goes downhill through the spectacular rocky landscape of the Zittau Mountains to Zittau. In this former cloth-making and trading town in the border triangle, a visit to the Cultural History Museum in the Franciscan monastery and the museum "Church of the Holy Cross" is worthwhile, where the famous Great Zittau Lenten Veil of 1472 can be seen in the largest museum display case in the world – a fascinating testament to biblical storytelling. Overnight stay in Zittau - Day 6: Individual departure from Zittau
