Among the thousand picturesque rock towers of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, things happen that sound so unbelievable they must be true—you simply couldn’t make something like that up. And there are certainly plenty of curiosities: flesh-eating crevices that spit out climbers bleeding and with torn clothing, ankle-shattering leaps over dark chasms, acrobatic human pyramids that look as if the Chinese National Circus were performing on the banks of the Elbe, and real men who tackle the rock barefoot. And sometimes even barefoot and drunk. These hair-raising stories—all of which actually happened—are recounted with fervor and in the original language.
