Oil Painting – For the Curious

In this course, you’ll learn a classic, multi-layered oil painting technique that has been used in European painting for many centuries. Step by step, you’ll create a painting using the traditional layering method. The oil painting course in Saxon Switzerland is designed for anyone who would like to learn this technique.

Here’s how the course works

To begin, you’ll select one of the prepared subjects that’s particularly well-suited for trying out the technique. Next, the subject is rendered in light-and-dark tones as an underpainting on the canvas. This is followed by layers of transparent and opaque paint, which gradually create depth, form, and color effects. In the final section, details are refined, contrasts are enhanced, and highlights are strategically placed.

Throughout the course, you’ll receive guidance on materials, tools, and classical composition. This will give you insight into the traditional structure of an oil painting and allow you to follow along with each step in practice.

Who is this course for?

The course is suitable for anyone with a curiosity for painting, whether or not they have prior experience. The course offers an accessible introduction and guides participants step by step through the entire painting process.

Good to Know

The course takes place at the Heymannbaude in Gohrisch (Kleinhennersdorf), in Saxon Switzerland. It lasts 3 days, with each session lasting about 3.5 hours from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. You may use your own materials by arrangement. You will receive further information after registration.
