Bassoon Concert as Part of the German-Czech Cultural Days
Students from the Carl Maria von Weber University of Music in Dresden and HAMU in Prague
Conductor: Prof. Philipp Zeller, doc. Jan Hudeček
Works by Verdi, Smetana, Schumann, and Prokofiev
What does musical exchange sound like? At Struppen Castle, young bassoonists from the Carl Maria von Weber University of Music in Dresden and the Prague Academy of Music and Performing Arts (HAMU) come together. Over the course of a multi-day workshop, they collaborate to develop a concert program that impressively showcases the versatility of the bassoon.
Under the direction of Prof. Philipp Zeller, principal bassoonist of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden and professor at the Dresden University of Music, as well as Doc. Jan Hudeček, principal bassoonist of the National Theater in Prague and one of the leading Czech bassoonists of his generation, a musical dialogue emerges between two conservatories, two traditions, and many individual artistic styles.
The program features works and arrangements by Giuseppe Verdi, Bedřich Smetana, Robert Schumann, and Sergei Prokofiev, which showcase the bassoon’s tonal range—from a lyrical solo instrument to a multifaceted ensemble instrument. Also performing is the Czech bassoonist and scholarship recipient of the Brücke/Most Foundation Anna Farářová.
A concert that impressively demonstrates how music transcends borders and how new artistic impulses arise from encounters.
