Guided Hiking Trip Saxon Switzerland

The hiking vacation in Saxon Switzerland takes you to one of the most spectacular landscapes in Germany. The Elbe Sandstone Mountains, as the region with the bizarre sandstone formations is also known, is our "hiking homeland." Almost every free weekend draws us to the Upper Elbe Valley. We are familiar with many paths here, yet there is always something new to discover. What makes the guided hikes in Saxon Switzerland an unforgettable experience is the natural diversity of the region. In a small space, various landscape forms come together: freestanding rock figures, massive table mountains, deep gorges, and green river valleys. The hiking vacation in Saxon Switzerland also takes you, crossing borders, to the Czech side of the "International Park" in Bohemian Switzerland. Along the way, we also cross the famous Painter's Path. We are guided by a national park guide who fell in love with the area more than 40 years ago and turned his passion into his profession. He knows almost every tree and rock, but most importantly, he knows the paths where we are often alone.
Our accommodation during the hiking tour in Saxon Switzerland is the small, family-run hotel Pirn’scher Hof. It is located in the heart of the old town of Pirna.

Tour Description

  • Day 1: Individual arrival in Pirna
In the evening, a welcome reception at the Pirn'scher Hof hotel, located in the historic old town of Pirna.
  • Day 2: Rugged and Charming - Wild Rock World in the Schmilka Area (approx. 12 km, approx. 4 h)
From the Elbe, we hike through unspoiled mixed forests and the Schmilka rock basin to the Großer Winterberg. In clear weather, we are rewarded with magnificent panoramic views stretching to the Dresden Frauenkirche, the peaks of the Osterzgebirge, and the Bohemian Central Mountains. During the hike, we enjoy spectacular views of the Schrammsteinkette and learn about the legends and lore of the region.
  • Day 3: The Wehlener Eight and the Bastei (approx. 15 km, approx. 5.5 h)
Today, we embark on a challenging circular hike on less-trodden paths through steep gorges and on scenic high trails around the town of Wehlen. Part of the route leads through the core zone of the national park, where we learn about the special need for protection. We also visit one of the tourist highlights: the Bastei Bridge.
  • Day 4: The Rock Castle Schauenstein and the Mysterious Mill(approx. 14 km, approx. 5.5 h)
Today, we visit the Czech side of the International Park. From the Rain Meadow (Mezni Louka), we hike to the "Little Prebischtor." From here, we continue to the Rock Castle Schauenstein. The castle was erected in the 14th century to protect trade routes and was later used by robber barons. From here, one enjoys a wonderful view into the Bohemian Switzerland. From the rock castle, we proceed to the Grundmühle in the romantic Kamnitz Gorge.
  • Day 5: Day off
Today, we take a break from hiking. You can embark on your own hikes in the area, visit Dresden or Prague, take a steamboat or canoe on the Elbe, or enjoy the day at the Tuscany Thermal Baths in Bad Schandau.
  • Day 6: In the Kirnitzsch Valley (approx. 16 km, approx. 5.5 h)
The Neumann Mill, located by the bubbling Kirnitzsch, is our first destination of the day. The mill is also one of the stage goals of the famous Painter's Path. We continue on wild mountain trails to the Frienstein, which is also very popular with climbers. We proceed to the mill in Schmilka, where fresh, fragrant bread is coming out of the oven, and home-brewed beer is being served — we should hurry!
  • Day 7: To the Roof of the Elbsandstein Mountains(approx. 15 km, approx. 5.5 h)
At the end, perhaps the most beautiful hike follows to the Hoher Schneeberg in Bohemia. At 723m, it is the highest elevation of the Elbsandstein Mountains and is easily recognizable due to its distinctive shape. From the observation tower, built in 1864, there are extensive panoramic views. In good weather, one can even see as far as the Jizera and Giant Mountains.
  • Day 8: Individual departure from Pirna
It's time to say goodbye. Of course, Prague and Dresden are always worth a visit.
