Painters' Path Part 1

from Pirna to Bad Schandau

Discover in four daily stages with a total of approximately 55 km the first section of the Malerweg from Pirna to Bad Schandau. You will hike directly from one accommodation to another, each located in close proximity or directly on the Malerweg. As early as the beginning of the 19th century, artists of the Romantic era like Caspar David Friedrich and Ludwig Richter roamed this fascinating landscape of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains to study and sketch its wild romantic surroundings. To this day, this extraordinary landscape, unique in Europe, has lost none of its allure. From Pirna, you will hike on the right bank of the Elbe through the Vordere Sächsische Schweiz National Park, through the rock gate in Uttewalder Grund, over the famous Bastei viewpoint, past the Amselfall to Hohnstein and further to Bad Schandau. The most wild and romantic part of the National Park is the Hintere Sächsische Schweiz, offering breathtaking views from the Schrammsteine and Affensteine, providing a perfect conclusion to your short hike on the Malerweg.

Tour description

  • Day 1: Individual arrival in Pirna
Affordable parking for cars is available in the parking garage, or you may arrive by train.
  • Day 2: Pirna - Lohmen (approx. 8 km)
The Malerweg begins at the entrance to the Liebethal Valley. This stage leads along the small Wesenitz stream through the romantic valley to the monumental Richard Wagner Monument. Hidden behind trees and bushes, the long-abandoned quarries testify to the long tradition of using sandstone as building material and millstones. After the town of Lohmen, you reach the Uttewalder Valley. Covered with ferns and mosses, this valley was often a motif for the paintings of the Romantic artists. Through the Uttewalder Stone Gate and the Wehlen Valley, the Malerweg leads to the town of Wehlen on the Elbe River.
  • Day 3: Lohmen - Hohnstein (approx. 15 km)
You hike from Lohmen through the Uttewalder Valley to the town of Wehlen. From Wehlen, the Malerweg follows the Schwarzbergweg past the "Stone Table" to the probably best-known landmark of the Saxon Switzerland, the Bastei viewpoint. From the Bastei viewpoint and Bastei Bridge, you look 190 meters deep into the Elbe Valley. After descending from the Bastei, you reach the small spa town of Rathen and continue hiking through the Amsel Valley to Rathewalde. From the Hockstein viewpoint, you can already see your day's destination, the castle town of Hohnstein. Through the narrow Wolfsschlucht gorge, you descend into the Polenz Valley and then climb back up to Hohnstein.
  • Day 4: Hohnstein - Bad Schandau (approx. 18 km)
From Hohnstein, you hike along a forest trail to one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Saxon Switzerland, the Brand viewpoint. You reach Bad Schandau via the Panorama Trail.
  • Day 5: Bad Schandau - Kirnitzschtal (approx. 13 km)
The Malerweg passes by the Falkenstein to the "Great Schramm Gate" and the impressive Schrammstein viewpoint. The endpoint of the stage is at the Lichtenhain Waterfall. Ride the Kirnitzschtal railway back to Bad Schandau.
  • Day 6: Individual departure from Bad Schandau
