Tour description
- Day 1: Individual arrival in Dessau
The city of Dessau is a UNESCO World Heritage Site three times over: as a Bauhaus city, with the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm, and the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve. Culture and nature therefore await you in equal measure. Further highlights include the Technology Museum on the grounds of the former Junkers aircraft and motor works, as well as the Kurt Weill Center in the Feininger Master House.
Overnight stay in Dessau- Day 2: Dessau – Lutherstadt Wittenberg (approx. 40 km)
From Dessau, the cycle path leads through the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm. Palaces and parks are just as embedded in this cultural landscape as meadows, forests, and lakes.
Just past the city center of Dessau lies one of the most idyllic estates: the Luisium, the former country seat of Princess Louise of Anhalt-Dessau. The journey continues through flat floodplains on the Elbe Cycle Path to Wittenberg, the cradle of the Reformation. There is much to discover while strolling through the Luther City. Explore the castle and the All Saints' Castle Church, or go looking for traces in the Luther, Melanchthon, or Cranach House.
Overnight stay in Lutherstadt Wittenberg - Day 3: Lutherstadt Wittenberg – Torgau (approx. 70 km)
Directly along the Elbe, the cycle path leads you to Elster, where a short stop to visit the historic post mill is recommended.
After Listerfehrda, the cycle path moves slightly away from the river until it approaches it again near Klöden. From the small town of Pretzsch, you can already see the Torgau Renaissance castle from afar. You cycle past the boatmen's church in Priesitz to Dommitzsch. From here, the route follows the Elbe dike to Torgau. In the 16th century, the city was the political center of Saxony and the Reformation. Walk in the footsteps of this era and visit Hartenfels Castle, the largest of the fully preserved early Renaissance castles in Germany.
Overnight stay in Torgau - Day 4: Torgau – Riesa/Moritz (approx. 50 km)
After leaving Torgau, the cycle path leads along fields and through small villages to Belgern.
On the way, you cycle through the village of WeĂźnig, where the first German cyclist church is located. In Belgern, the nearly six-meter-high Roland statue made of Elbe sandstone awaits you directly at the town hall. You follow the cycle path along the Elbe to Strehla. This small, romantic town invites you to linger. In addition to a tour of the late Gothic town church, you should plan an excursion to the Nixstein on the Elbe. Numerous myths surround the broad granite rock that once endangered shipping. From Strehla, you cycle on the Elbe Cycle Path to the present-day sports city of Riesa
Overnight stay in Riesa/Moritz - Day 5: Riesa/Moritz – Meißen (approx. 30 km)
From Diesbar-SeuĂźlitz, you follow the Saxon Wine Route and ride through the picturesque landscape of the Elbe wine villages.
Cozy wine taverns repeatedly invite you to linger in one of the smallest German wine-growing regions. In MeiĂźen, we recommend a visit to the Porcelain Museum. In 1710, the first European porcelain manufactory was founded in the city, initially producing at the Albrechtsburg, and remains a global leader to this day. Demonstration workshops invite you to experience the craftsmanship up close. A stroll through the historic old town and a visit to the cathedral and Albrechtsburg round off your stay.
Overnight stay in Meißen - Day 6: Meißen – Dresden (approx. 30 km)
Along the Saxon Wine Route, you ride past Coswig and via Radebeul to Dresden.
The city of Radebeul, also known as the "Saxon Nice" due to its mild climate, is famous for its many villas. In addition to two villa districts, however, there are also eight historic village centers here that invite you to explore and linger. Meanwhile, you can walk in the footsteps of Winnetou at the Karl May Museum. You continue to Dresden, where the famous city skyline welcomes you. In the historic old town, sights are lined up one after the other. The Zwinger, the Residential Palace, the Semperoper, the Frauenkirche, the Historic Green Vault, and the many museums keep the history of the city alive.
Overnight stay in Dresden - Day 7: Dresden – Bad Schandau (approx. 45 km)
You leave Dresden and cycle past the three Elbe castles and the "Blue Wonder" to Pillnitz.
The glamorous Pillnitz Castle with its extensive park, the former summer residence of the Saxon royal family, is considered the most important chinoiserie palace complex in Europe. In the artfully landscaped park stands a rarity: an over 200-year-old camellia tree. Your tour continues to Pirna. Shortly past the city, you will already see the first sandstone cliffs and table mountains that give Saxon Switzerland its unique character. Amidst the bizarre rock world, you end your tour in the spa town of Bad Schandau.
