Hiking Guides

Although signposting along the complete Malerweg is superb, a hiking guide and some audio and reading material are quite recommendable. And whoever joins a themed guided tour learns a lot about the little and the big secrets left and right of the hiking trail.

Knowledge: Hiking guides and books about the Malerweg Trail

In addition to the free Malerweg Trail brochure, there are various hiking guides available, published by “Hikeline” and “outdoor” and others that provide extra information and maps. Frank Richter’s book “Der historische Malerweg” (The Historic Painters’ Trail) describes the successive discovery of Saxon Switzerland by artists and tourists in the 18th and 19th century. The volume is illustrated with historic pictures of the landscape and focusses on painters’, musicians’ and poets’ fascination for the picturesque rocky landscape, on famous visitors of the area and the sketches, paintings and travel recitals they left to posterity. Manfred Schober’s book with the title “Malerweg Elbsandsteingebirge” (Elbe Sandstone Mountains Painters’ Trail) is more specialized to circuit day tours and amazes by its background information.
