Following the footsteps of Richard Wagner through the wild romantic Liebethaler Grund to the (ruined) Lochmühle. Right next to it is the world's largest monument of the composer.

When Richard Wagner withdrew to Graupa in 1846 during his work on the opera Lohengrin for peace to compose, he also made some hikes in the nearby Liebethaler Grund. It is said that this romantic valley was also a source of inspiration for him. Today, the Malerweg leads through here, and near the now ruined Lochmühle, the impressive Wagner monument created by Professor Richard Guhr bears witness to the composer's stay. The varied hike through the shaded, cool valley is especially recommended after a longer dry period and during the hot midsummer. Those who find the ascent on sandstone pavement from Lochmühle to Mühlsdorf too steep can also use the same path for the return journey.

Directions

From the parking lot at the bus turning area Liebethal, we first hike along the Wesenitz stream into the narrowing valley. Short bumpy sections as well as the forest floor, especially softened by rain at the beginning, make pushing assistance by accompanying persons advisable. Just before the ruin of the former Copitz electricity works, the path leads close past towering rocks to a long bridge over its water ditch. To get onto the wide footbridge, two relatively high steps must be overcome – assistance is definitely required for wheelchair users! Afterwards, the path continues easily to the Richard Wagner monument directly in front of the nowadays ruined Lochmühle. A short detour on the bridge over the Wesenitz behind the Lochmühle is still worthwhile because a water cascade can be seen from here which was even immortalized by romantic artists in their drawings. The undoubtedly most strenuous part of the hike is then the steep ascent on a sandstone-paved path up to Mühlsdorf. The slope during these approximately 100 meters is probably between 12 and 14 percent. Once there, we first walk on the village street which after a small allotment garden turns into a bike path back to Liebethal with its worth-seeing village church. Finally, the route leads again a few hundred meters down a public street back to the starting point of our hike.
