Favorite city Dresden

Follow the most famous artist of German Romanticism. The painter drew inspiration for his pictures on his wanderings through Saxony. His main place of work was Dresden.

He is one of the most important artists of 19th century German Romanticism. Liked thousands of times on Instagram and the like, his pictures of longing trigger something very special in us 250 years later. They touch our souls and tell of the fateful connection between man and nature. And of the fateful life of Caspar David Friedrich. He spent most of his life in Dresden. Caspar David Friedrich was a convinced slow traveler - he just didn't know it yet. When the famous painter traveled, he walked at a leisurely pace, always wearing the same grey travel coat and stopping frequently to make his sketches. Carriage rides were already too fast for him. He did not want to let impressions pass by fleetingly, but to absorb them in a lasting way. Traveling in his footsteps satisfies our longing for deceleration. The valley along the Elbe between the Elbland and Dresden to Saxon Switzerland offers an incomparable opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the Romantic artist. Like Caspar David Friedrich, visitors should not only pay attention to "what they see before them, but also what they see within them". A journey with leisure. It is fascinating how easy it is to lose yourself in Caspar David Friedrich's world on walks, hikes and bike rides.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Dresden
Visit the Brühl Garden on the Brühl Terrace. Here you will find a monument in honour of Caspar David Friedrich. Right next to it is the Art Academy, where the painter taught for several years as an associate professor.

Day 2: A day of art and culture
Explore Dresden by bus today. At the Zwinger you board the hop-on/hop-off bus and learn where and why Caspar David Friedrich spent over 40 years in Dresden. Afterwards you can immerse yourself in his artistic works. Here you have the choice between the Albertinum or the Kupferstichkabinet.

Day 3: Hike through Saxon Switzerland
Today you will follow Caspar David Friedrich to his places of inspiration - Saxon Switzerland. Here you will walk 9 km from Wehlen to Rathen. Follow him to the Uttenwalder Grund. In 1825 he immortalised this landscape in an oil painting. Climb up to the Bastei, where you can feel like the artist in his work "Rock Landscape in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains".

Day 4: The romantic castle town of Meissen
It feels as if nothing has changed since Friedrich saw this medieval-looking town with his own eyes. And he loved Meissen. The painting Gate Entrance in Meissen actually depicts the Holy Cross Monastery in Meissen. The Kupferstich-Kabinett owns a drawing with "View from the Chapter House" and "Two Views of the Monastery Ruins". The watercolour "View of Meißen" can also be found with a pencil drawing in the Kupferstich-Kabinett, as well as the "Gothic Church Tower in Meißen".

Day 5 Departure
Today we say goodbye to Caspar David Friedrich in Dresden, where the painter's main works were created, which are now regarded as worldwide testimonies to German Romanticism. Come back and follow his footsteps in Saxon Switzerland and the Zittau Mountains.
