The guided hiking trip Dresden and the Elbe Sandstone Mountains reveals the gems of this diverse region. In addition to the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, we also discover Dresden and Meißen. Saxony is not only Germany's easternmost wine region but also the smallest. It stretches from Dresden-Pillnitz to Meißen. Pillnitz is especially known for its castle, which Augustus the Strong had remodeled according to his wishes at the beginning of the 18th century. Here, many small vintners also cultivate their vines. Along the Dresden Wine Trail, we walk with a view of the Elbe Valley to Graupa. Here we have the opportunity to visit the Richard Wagner Museum. During his time as the Saxon court conductor, he composed large parts of Lohengrin here. From the heights above Graupa, you can already gaze into the Saxon Switzerland. On three hikes, we get a small glimpse of the beauty of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. One of our destinations is the Bastei, the most famous rock formation in the region. Before the Romantics discovered this place for themselves, robber barons roamed here. In Meißen, we hike along the Saxon Wine Trail with a constant view of the Albrechtsburg Castle, which proudly sits above the old town of Meißen. Its majestic appearance testifies to the great importance the castle held for the city and the country for a long time.
Our accommodation is the centrally located Best Western Dresden Hotel, situated between Neustadt and Altstadt.

Tour description
- Day 1: Individual Arrival in Pirna
In the evening, welcome at the Pirn'scher Hof hotel in the historic old town of Pirna. - Day 2: Rugged and Charming - Wild Rock World in the Schmilka Area (approx. 12 km, approx. 4 h)
From the Elbe, we hike through unspoiled mixed forests and the Schmilka Rock Basin to the Großer Winterberg. In clear weather, we will be rewarded with magnificent views as far as Dresden's Frauenkirche, the peaks of the Eastern Ore Mountains, and the Bohemian Central Uplands. During the hike, we enjoy spectacular views of the Schrammstein Range and learn about tales and legends of the region. - Day 3: The Wehlener Eight and the Bastei (approx. 15 km, approx. 5.5 h)
Today, we embark on a challenging circular hike along little-trodden paths through steep gorges and scenic ridge roads around the town of Wehlen. Part of the route leads through the core zone of the national park. We learn about the park's particular need for protection. We also visit one of the tourist highlights: the Bastei Bridge. - Day 4: The Rock Castle Schauenstein and the Mysterious Mill (approx. 14 km, approx. 5.5 h)
Today we visit the Czech side of the international park. From Rain Meadow (Mezni Louka), we hike to the "Little Prebisch Gate." From here, we continue to the rock castle Schauenstein. The castle was built in the 14th century to protect trade routes and was later used by robber barons. From here, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Bohemian Switzerland. From the rock castle, we continue to the Grundmühle in the romantic Kamnitz Gorge. - Day 5: Free Day
Today, we take a break from hiking. You can undertake hikes in the vicinity on your own, visit Dresden or Prague, take a steamboat or canoe ride on the Elbe, or enjoy the day at the Toscana Therme in Bad Schandau. - Day 6: In the Kirnitzsch Valley (approx. 16 km, approx. 5.5 h)
The Neumannmühle, located by the bubbling Kirnitzsch, is our first destination of the day. The mill is also one of the stage destinations of the famous Painter's Way. We continue our hike on wild mountain paths to Frienstein, which is also very popular with climbers. Further on, we reach the mill in Schmilka, where fresh, fragrant bread is just being taken out of the oven and home-brewed beer is served - we should hurry! - Day 7: To the Roof of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains (approx. 15 km, approx. 5.5 h)
Finally, perhaps the most beautiful hike leads us to the Hoher Schneeberg in the Bohemian region. At 723m, it is the highest elevation of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and is easily recognized due to its distinctive shape. The observation tower, built in 1864, offers a wide panoramic view. In good weather, you can even see as far as the Jizera and Giant Mountains. - Day 8: Individual Departure from Pirna
It's time to say goodbye. Of course, Prague and Dresden are always worth a visit.
